Elijah, 11 years old, was the first free-born black child born in his town in Canada.  His family, like many others, fled to Canada on the Underground Railroad to escape from slavery in the United States.  When a thief steals money meant to help another family on their journey, Elijah follows him to Detroit, Michigan to bring him to justice.  There Elijah must use all his wits to avoid being captured as a runaway.
