Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
The year is 1910 and Maia, an orphan, is sent from England to live with relatives on their rubber farm along the Amazon River.  There she finds new friends and plenty of adventure in beautiful and exotic Brazil.  Maia is a strong heroine in a time period when girls and women were supposed to be docile and meek.  She is determined to find justice for her new friend Finn who is to be sent back to England against his will.

The Great Kapok Tree; A Story of the Amazon Rain Forest by Lynne Cherry
A man falls asleep under a huge tree in the rain forest - a tree he has come to cut down.  As he sleeps, he is visited by the creatures of the forest who explain to him how important the tree is to all of them. The beautiful illustrations show the variety of plant and animal life along Brazil's Amazon River.
